Hello Friends, Old and New
Dec. 6th, 2018 12:36 am Fandom seems to have come full circle. After the mass exodus from LJ we scattered, some here to DW, many to Tumblr, some to Facebook and some to various other sites. Now with Tumblr doing it's best to commit suicide many of us that took refuge there are migrating back to where we should have been all along. My main reasons for not staying here after leaving LJ were 1) only a small portion of fandom migrated here 2) I was disenchanted with the LJ/DW style blogs. My fandoms were changing rapidly and my flist didn't/couldn't keep up. 3) I couldn't (and still can't) host my graphics here. I had over 2500 images hosted on LJ and only a handful (literally) will fit within the limited space available here. *sigh*
So while I migrated to Tumblr and Facebook for my fannish endeavors, it only took a few years for me to become disgusted with how fandom evolved on those sites. It became a toxic dumpster fire, with more ship wars and vitriol than I had ever seen; and considering my fandoms, I have seen some pretty nasty stuff. So, I pulled away from fandom and just skirted the fringes for the last two years or so. But I have recently decided, I miss fandom. More specifically, I miss how fandom worked on LJ. So, I've come home.
Expect few posts in the coming days. I have things to say about Doctor Who, David Weber's Honor Harrington series and Stargate.
To new friends, feel free to browse through my old posts or even take a look through my Tumblr (arenee1999) to get a sense of who I am. My Tumblr will tell you exactly who I am, the wide mix of content creates a rather complete picture of my personality. I also have some of my graphics posted there. My favorites will probably get posted here eventually. I also have a small amount of fic posted on AO3 (arenee1999). Most of it's crap, but it's there if you're curious.
ETA:
I have once again signed up for
fandom_stocking after a two year hiatus. For those that don't know what that is: It's a gift exchange. You post a wishlist and other people fill them. You can get/give fic, art, graphics, recipes, recs, general greetings. You're not required to gift to everyone but are encouraged to gift to a few people. I always try to gift to at least a few people with small/obscure fandoms listed, as they tend to get the fewest gifts.

Date: 2018-12-06 07:25 am (UTC)I actually like the post and comment format here, and FB certainly isn't fannish. I only joined tumblr because I had to for a fic challenge but I didn't take to it. The more people who come back here, the more I'll feel like posting!

Date: 2018-12-06 08:05 am (UTC)Facebook actually has a huge fandom presence. It's all done through groups, which work similar to the comms here and on LJ. And on Pages.
A few months ago in a Harry Potter FB group, I actually had someone try to tell me LJ never had very much (if any) fandom presence. No matter how much I told her she was wrong, she refused to believe me. Going so far as to tell me she knew best because she was in a tiny fandom (Scarecrow and Mrs. King) which made her an expert on all things fannish. So yeah, at that point I left most of the groups I was in since many members took her side in the argument and made it clear I wasn't really wanted there anymore. SMH

Date: 2018-12-06 05:43 pm (UTC)I need to do a few comm searches too. Currently only 1-2 of the comms I'm in here are active.

Date: 2018-12-06 10:01 pm (UTC)I think I must have phased out of LJ before the fandom ship wars and ugliness began, but I had several friends fill me in on it. I know they've been quite ugly on tumblr for years now, and even though I don't speak on there, I see the arguments on my gif posts and some of the asks that come into my groups are outright mean and horrible. Especially the Harry Potter groups. Like, what is with all of these people getting so ugly over Harry Potter? Can't you all just agree that we all love this fandom instead of bullying each other over ships or bashing JKR?

Date: 2018-12-07 12:02 am (UTC)I just don't like the idea of using imagur or tinypic to host my images and Photobucket had a data and storage limit for free accounts. I may have to dust off my Photobucket accounts anyway and hope Dreamwidth gets a better system eventually.
I guess the timing of fandom meltdowns and ship wars from LJ depended a lot on what fandoms you were following. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer ship wars were in the early 2000's, but Harry Potter and Doctor Who didn't have major problems until just about the time we all started leaving LJ. Tumblr has become a nasty battleground though for all the major fandoms and in many ways Facebook is even worse. I just don't get why people have such a hard time allowing other people to like different aspects of the same fandom. It's absurd and ridiculous.

Date: 2018-12-07 06:37 am (UTC)I'm really glad I wasn't around for the ship wars on LJ. I may have been there while they were firing up, but I wasn't in any of the communities, as my circle of friends on there kept things pretty lively just within our own journals. I watched them get so ugly on tumblr, that a lot of creators stopped posting in some fandoms because they hated all of the horrible comments that would appear on their posts, from people they didn't even know. I totally agree with you there. Let people like what they like and move on.
