I finally saw Anonymous! I so wanted to see it while it was in theatres, but didn’t get a chance to. So I’ve been rather impatiently awaiting the DVD release. Not wanting to sit through the ‘short wait’ on Netflix, I went to Best Buy yesterday and bought it. XDXDXD
Rhys is brilliant as Edward de Vere (and gorgeous as well!). Vanessa Redgrave, well she’s Vanessa Redgrave, of course she’s fantastic. I didn’t recognise David Thewlis at first, it took a few scenes then I recognised his voice. ;)
The fictional story surrounding the theory of the film is… weak, but the acting more than makes up for it. As for the theory itself… well, the idea that William Shakespeare, an illiterate actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, is the author of these works is highly unlikely. Whether you believe Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, is the author is another matter entirely. It does, however, make the plays a lot more interesting if you look at them through the politics of the time with de Vere as the author. If nothing else, the movie, and the theory it's based on, makes you think.
I am thoroughly in love with this movie and am seriously considering watching it again tonight!
