Day 9: Fandom Snowflake Challenge

In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed.

Talk about a talent you discovered you have. Finding folks who are geekier than you, or on the flip side, finding out that there is no one geekier than you. A person who changed your life. The possibilities are endless. Big or small, what unexpected surprises have you found?


Fandom and fanfic have been nothing but one big surprise to me from the beginning. I started out only reading het, thinking I'd never be able to read slash, now the majority of my ships are slash. There have been quite a few ships I thought I'd never be able to bring myself to read because the characters were too different, or in some cases too similar, to pair together without it being painful and disastrous, now some of those pairings are among my favorites. The same with certain kinks and tropes, I thought I'd be squicked or otherwise uncomfortable reading them and now I love them. If nothing else, fandom has taught me never to limit myself without first trying something and I owe van most of the credit for helping me figure that out.

I'm also endlessly surprised by my ability to make graphics. It took a few years and a lot of hard work to get to the point where my creations were good, let alone great, but I never thought I'd have any kind of creative ability so I still get giddy with excitement when something comes out how I envisioned or better. XD

I really like the aspect of fandom that allows you try new forms of expression. Then it constantly challenges you to get better. It's a wonderful platform for developing talent and skill.

And people in fandom are very supportive.
