NCM Fathom and U.S. Figure Skating will present the cinematic feature RISE as part of a special in-theater event on Feb. 17, 2011. This historic one-night Fathom Event will celebrate American figure skating while commemorating the 50th anniversary and legacy of the 1961 U.S. World Team tragedy.
The event will be broadcast live from the Best Buy Theater in New York City’s Times Square to over 500 movie theaters nationwide on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT/6:00 p.m. MT/8:00 p.m. PT (tape delayed). (Pre-show features will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.)
Hosted by Matt Lauer, Co-Anchor NBC News TODAY Show, the event will feature the premier of RISE and uniquely choreographed figure skating performances, including a piece by 2010 Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek. An inspirational cinematic feature about the power of the human spirit, RISE will take audiences on a journey that honors a remarkable group of athletes who through their loss inspired the hopes, dreams and successes of some of the most iconic names in Olympic sports history.
Interviews with RISE storytellers Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano and Michelle Kwan, and reactions from other American figure skating legends, will proceed and follow the premiere of RISE.
Limited seats available – buy your tickets today by entering your zip code online or visiting your participating theater box office.
Proceeds from RISE and the Feb. 17, 2011, event will be used to further the mission of U.S. Figure Skating’s Memorial Fund, which was established Feb. 23, 1961, as a living tribute to those that lost their lives in the crash of Sabena Airlines Flight 548 en route to the World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The Memorial Fund awards approximately $300,000 annually in grants and scholarships to skaters, recognizing excellence both on and off the ice.
