Why, oh why, do I  keep getting drawn into such angst ridden fandoms/pairings? Seriously, RL is depressing enough. I don't need to be crying over fanfiction and I certainly shouldn't enjoy crying over fanfiction so much. It just ain't right.

Sometimes we just need to get out of ourselves and think about other things. Nothing wrong with that. And nothing mysterious about watching sad movies, listening to sad songs, or reading sad stories in order to work out your own pain or angst or problems. Crying releases stress. It is for the good. And doing it over a piece of fanfiction is not harmful.

It is addicting, isn't it? And I can think of a lot worse things--like hopelessly schmaltzy romance. (Although I'm sometimes guilty of that if it's between the right pair.)

Very addicting :) I agree, schmaltzy romance has it's place and is occasionally nice to see. Although, aside from angst, my favorite type of fic is PWP.

So long as the angst isn't a reflection of RL or you start getting confused it should be "healthy" enough to write.
Can I confess I have no idea what PWP means?

PWP = Porn without Plot
You know, the ones where they throw each other against a wall and f*** and there's no annoying plot to get in the way of the fun ;)

I'm new to fic writing, so I'm trying to stay away from angst stories. I'm not sure I would be able to write one all that well.

I wrote a Forever Knight fic where one of the OCs took poison when the Romans attacker her village. 10 odd years alter, I still cry when I reread that part [g] I'm very pathetic! The PotC/Highlander cross I wrote a few months ago made me cry so much as I was writing, I had to stop.

Don't feel too bad. Some of my favorite fics, in various fandoms, are angst stories and I cry every time I read them.

But angst is good. To quote from an episode of Dr Who (dont' remember episode title, but it was this year) "sad is happy for deep people."

I did my fair share of angstfics when I was in fanfiction. Now I do novels with angsty romance.
