What are the five love stories that you love the most, in canon or fan sources (fanfic, vids, other)?

Because I am such a fan of angst this list will be quite painful. I think "Happily Ever After" is so much sweeter if you've gone through hell (or in Buffy's case, heaven) to get there . Since none of my favorites are canon, I'll post links to my favorite stories for each pairing.

These aren't in any particular order.

1. Duncan/Methos (Highlander): The bleeding heart and the man who was Death on a horse. Talk about angst :)

2. Blake/Avon (Blake's 7): They are so much alike that the only chance for real happiness lies in AU or AR stories. Their chemistry is undeniable though.
Favorite angst ridden love story: The Last Best Hope by Melody Clark FRAO
the sequel: The Long Way Back FRAO

3. Spike/Xander (BtVS): An impossible pairing to say the least.
Favorite angst ridden love story: Changes by tabaqui FRAO

4. Avon/Vila (Blake's 7): Avon's inability to trust for fear of betrayal makes this pairing...difficult. The best chance for them may be PGP (Post Gauda Prime) or in AU/AR stories.
I've only just started reading this pairing so I haven't found a 'novel length' story yet (if one even exists). However, this one (while short, relatively speaking) fits quite well with the over all theme here.

5. Buffy/Giles (BtVS): Not nearly as angst ridden as the others listed here, usually.
I have however found a few angsty love stories (not a surprise really. Is it?)

Honorable Mention: Giles/Ethan (BtVS): Can't get more angst ridden than this really.
I have never found a 'Happy Ever After' story for this pairing. I have recently found a series that is really quite good and as close as Giles and Ethan might ever get to a happily ever after.

There are many more wonderful stories in all of these pairings and choosing one favorite is sometimes near impossible.

I hear you on the joys of doomed relationships. Looking at my list, three of the couples have one of them dead, another broke up off camera for reasons never addressed. Must be my contrary nature.

When I was writing TNG fic, I did several Riker/Troi not working out stories. Could never get into Worf/Dax, either.

Romance is hard to do on television, by the nature of the series medium. That was one of my reasons for moving into original fiction, but I'll always be a shipper at heart.

Mal/Inara = lovely. Sigh.
